Gobble, gobble

Yes, there will be turkey and gravy and pie -- Grandpa's super-duper special recipe pumpkin pie, thank you very much -- at my house today. I will probably eat myself brainless. But let the record show that I'm also gobbling down this book as part of my Thanksgiving treats:

Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer's Life
by Pamela Smith Hill

It is, both literally and figuratively, the Laura Ingalls Wilder biography I've been waiting for. Yes, I finally got my grubby paws on it, but it's more than just that. You remember that scene in A Christmas Story when Miss Shields grades Ralphie's theme and clasps it to her bosom -- *gasp* "The theme I've been waiting for all my life!" That's what I'm talking about. This book is good eatin', so to speak.

I will not shatter your illusions on a holiday, but I just have to say that you will not believe what REALLY happened to Jack, the brindle bulldog.

(And speaking of Laura Ingalls and food, the eat-headcheese-and-get-a-book contest is still open....)
